Our History and HeritageFounded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity, the Knights of Columbus was established in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Conn., and a group of parishioners. Their intent? To bring financial aid and assistance to the sick, disabled and needy members and their families.
Today, Father McGivney is being considered for sainthood. The first Canadian chapter of the Knights of Columbus was formed on Nov. 22, 1897 in Montreal, Quebec. Charlottetown council #844 consisting of 84 members was instituted on Dec. 13, 1903 Fr. J.D. McNeill council 9025 was formed on June 9, 1989 at Stella Maris parish North Rustico with members participating from St. Anne's, Hope River and St. Auguustine's parish in Rustico. Today, the Knights of Columbus is a multi-cultural, multi-national organization with 2 Million members in over 17 countries around the world. |
Our FaithOur goal is to help men, their families and their parishes grow closer to Christ. Through our programs and resources, we provide opportunities to live and spread the Catholic faith.
Responding to need since our foundingService and charity are at the heart of the Knights. Founded to meet the needs of immigrants, refugees and families suffering from the death of a breadwinner, the Knights began as a small service organization and has grown into a worldwide financial and charitable organization.
